Budapest TOP attractions

Hello World!

As you already know, we are in Budapest! Previous blog was about Where to stay in Budapest (LINK), but this one will give you more insight to Budapest TOP attractions. Without further a do, let’s start with our Budapest 2018 picks!

Heroes’ Square

Take the M1 metro line and it will get you right in front of this glorious Budapest square. This is definitely my favorite square in Budapest, maybe even Europe. Hungarians have commemorated their important National leaders, by building the statues of them, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Somehow, we always end up visiting it by night and we love it with all the lights turned on.

DianoMaya_Budapest-1748
DianoMaya_Budapest-1752

Near Heroes’ Square are you can also find Vajdahunyad Castle, outdoor “City Park Ice Rink” and Szechenyi Baths and Pool.
Entrance fee to visit the Courtyard of the Vajdahunyad Castle is free. However, should you wish to visit Museum of Agriculture residing in Vajdahunyad Castle, entrance fee is approx. 5 EUR.
City Park Ice Rink season 2017/2018 is, unfortunately, closed.

You know that this trip was all about finding best ways to “explore while relaxing”. That is the main reason why we have chosen to chill a little in Szechenyi Baths and PoolThese baths have 18 pools, from which 2 outdoor pools, 10 saunas and massages. Of course, we tried the outdoor ones even though it was -5 Celsius outside. Thermal outdoor pool was heated on 28 Celsius, so we ran out to the pool with nothing but a swimsuit on.

TIPS:

  • bring a towel, swimsuit and slippers (otherwise, you can rent there)
  • you can buy your bath ticket in advance and get discount
  • if you are buying the tickets at the Baths, after 7 pm, tickets are more affordable
  • book a locker or a cabin to put your belongings (you will be given a silicon waterproof wristband, which looks like a watch)

Chain Bridge

Go across the Danube river to the Buda side, over the Chain Bridge. The most popular bridge in town and also the most crowded. Lion’s guarding the bridge entrance are impressive every time we see them. Don’t you agree?

DianoMaya_Budapest-1638
DianoMaya_Budapest-1188474

So, once you are on Buda side you can walk up to Buda Castle or take historical cable car up. Buda Castle Funicular runs every 10 minutes and it is a fairly cheap way (approx. 5 EUR) to save your legs 🙂

DianoMaya_Budapest-1701

Buda Castle

This historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, currently hosts Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum, Hungarian Presidential Palace, Matthias Church, Holy Trinity Statue and Fisherman’s Bastion.

Parliament of Budapest

For me, this is the most impressive building in entire Budapest. It lies on Danube river, on Kossuth Lajos Square and it is apparently the largest building in Hungary. You can reach the Parliament with Tram line 2 (which is also the scenic route tram).

DianoMaya_Budapest-1655
DianoMaya_Budapest-1648

Wanna see it by night? Check out our Budepest 2016 blog -> HERE.
Also, try to get picture of the Parliament from the Buda side of Danube river, that way you can really capture it’s all glory!

DianoMaya_Budapest-1667

Close to the Parliament, when you walking back to Chain bridge, you can find “Shoes on the Danube Promenade Memorial”. On the other side of the Parliament, you can walk towards Margaret Island & Bridge, the only “3 exit bridge” we know!

Find out more about Margaret Island in our Budapest 2016 blog -> HERE

Citadella

To get the best Budapest city views go to Citadella! This fort is located on the top of Gellért Hill, with Liberty Statue monument on it’s front.

DCIM111MEDIADJI_0015.JPG
DCIM111MEDIADJI_0030.JPG

Liberty Bridge

When you walk down from Gellért Hill you will pass by several monuments, Cave church and Hotel Gellért  (which also has Baths, apparently second best in Budapest) and you will end up in front of Liberty Bridge. Central Market Hall is right across the bridge, on the other side of Danube, and Hungarian National Museum is 10 minute walk from there.

Sometimes, it is just worth of getting lost in the city. You can easily walk all around most popular attractions, if you prepare well. So, take that Budapest map, circle all top attractions you’ve liked so far and make a plan how to cover it all!
Public transport is also very easy to use. Take Tram 2 for scenic route, which passes by most Budapest attractions on Pest side. We also recommend using Metro lines. After a day, you will feel like you know all the stops, lines and how to use them. Don’t we all just want to feel like local? Wandering around the city, without chasing any attraction, just soaking up the city vibe and admiring it, is the best feeling in the world!

St. Stephen’s Basilica

This time we only passed by St. Stephen’s Basilica, on our way to look for some food. You can enter the church, but there is a fee. You can climb up to the tower and find a nice view, but there is a fee. You get my point? Other attractions, with views, in Budapest are free, plus the view is not as stunning as from Buda Castle or Citadella.

DianoMaya_Budapest-1731

Now, let’s jump to some juicy stuff! We are always hungry, but we never find time to eat. So, when we eat, we eat goooood. We loved MenzaSzimpla Kert last time when we were in Budapest, so decision was easy – eat, drink & repeat!

Wellness and Spa Weekend

Hello world!

We are in Krapinske toplice!! We are visiting perfect place for relaxation, wellness and amazing gourmet experience, Villa Magdalena.

Villa Magdalena_dianomaya-9157

How to get from Split to Villa Magdalena?

We took A1 highway from Split and had 5 hour drive to Croatian Zagorje. Krapinske Toplice are just 45 km from Zagreb.

Villa Magdalena has 6 apartments and 18 double rooms. Our room was simply wonderful and bed was super comfortable! Room had balcony with view of mountain Medvednica and hydro massage bathtub, in the living room, with chromo therapy and spring thermal water. Mindblowing!

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0018.JPG

Last, but not least, Hotel restaurant was real gastro experience. Their professional, young, staff was flawless. We had half board; breakfast and dinner included in our accommodation price. We booked Wellness romance package, but you can choose from several other packages they offer.

Hello world!

We are on a cruise, wohoooo! Yacht Korab invited us for one day cruise on Brač island. Isn’t that amazing? We have been trying to find different ways to escape everyday life and being on the sea is definitely a good way to relax and get away.

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0013.JPG

Step one: get on board Korab Yacht and sail away.

The sun deck is perfect to take sip of your coffee or just read a book with the sound of the sea.

TOP things to do in STOBREC

Hello world!

IMG_5436-1

Recently, we have been posting few pictures from Stobrec on our Instagram page (are you following us jet? -> DianoMaya) and our followers keep asking us what are best things to do in Stobrec. Finally, we have some time to name TOP 5:

CAMPING STOBREC

Camp “Camping Stobreč Split” is in green oasis, surrounded on two sides by the sea and on the third side by Žrnovnica river mouth. Besides chic and cozy bungalows, they have “Horus” restaurant and few beach bars. You can find sun chairs and parasols to rent, under which you can enjoy sipping interesting cocktails and listening good music. Beach, also, offers may activities, which are on our list too :).

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0006.JPG

PINNIDAE EXPLORING – Mediterranean pen shell

In Stobrec, you can find family of Mediterranean pen shell. Take your snorkeling gear and explore underwater! Just be aware, they are protected species and fine for harvesting is 400 EUR (3.000 HRK).

STOBREC CITY CENTRE

Visit old Christian basilica, remains of an antique fortification wall and walk down riva promenada.

FOOD

There are many restaurants with traditional Dalmatian cuisine and we highly recommend “Konoba Nikola”.

See you again soon and don’t forget to:

ACTIVE VACATION TOURS IN CROATIA

Hello world!

We have been working very hard, so we paused with blogging for a while. Some of you already know that we are seasonal workers in Croatia. Imagine being in Croatia and not experience what it has to offer? No, big no! Always find time to have fun in life!

Today we are taking you trough our ACTIVE VACATION TOURS:

PRIVATE BOAT TOUR, SPLIT

Split, Private boat tour

Hopp on Biseran boat and ask them to take you on sunset tour near Split. Boris from Biseran was task oriented and made for us tailored tour to Čiovo. We took some Gin, fruit, lost’s of positive energy and had the best time we had in a long time!

Find out more HERE.

ZIP LINE, OMIŠ

Are you as much as adrenaline junkie as we are? Experience the rush while descending through the Cetina canyon with ZipLine Omiš! It has 8 steel ZipLine wires with total length of 2.100 m and the longest one is 700m (conveniently or not, that is the first one). Also worth of mentioning is the speed, they say you can go 65 km/h.

Before you go to big wires there is short wire where guides will teach you how to brake and act on cable on these small lines. So, if you haven’t done it before, don’t be afraid they will show you how to ZipLine. Keep in mind there are short walks between wires, so dress appropriately. Bring water! We were in bigger group, so we waited on each wire.

We were in Omiš several times, even took a ride with a boat on a river, but the views of Cetina canyon and river from ZipLine is something very different and breathtaking!!

KRKA WATERFALLS, ŠIBENIK

While Plitvice National Park is more popular tourist destination, there is little difference between the two. Most important difference is that in Krka National Park you can actually swim in the water! That is also the main reason why we like it more :).

Krka National Park in Croatia is located in central Dalmatia, just a few kilometers of the city of Šibenik. We got there from Split, with a car, but you can easily find daily tours.

Main attractions are the waterfalls and cascades Skradinski buk, Roški slap and island Visovac with its monastery. Keep in mid there is a lot of walking, so bring appropriate shoes, liters of water and something to eat. You can make little picnic at the meadow near Skradinski buk, just be aware of hungry swans that walk around :).

BOAT TOUR, ISLAND VIS

Island Vis is our favorite island in Croatia, so far. We did full day trip around the island, last year, and it was the best summer memory we had! Boat trip starts and ends in Komiza city. They took us to popular beach Stiniva and Green cave, less known but wonderful Smokova and Pritišćina bay, military tunnels and we passed by Vis city.

See you again soon and don’t forget to:

She is in love with Plitvice waterfall!

Hello World!

For you who didn’t recognize it, we are in Plitvice National Park, one of the most beautiful National Park in Europe and Maya is in love with it!

IMG_4558-1

Plitvice National Park, in Croatia, is known for its 16 lakes, waterfalls, canyons and streams, which makes it perfect gateway from crowded cities. If you are planing trip soon, here are some information that might help you organize it!

PARKING

We drove to Plitvice NP with a car, therefore we needed a parking. Car parking costs 7HRK (1EUR) per hour. There are 2 Main entrances to the park and each have parking. We arrived from Rastoke and road led us to Entrance 1.

ENTRANCE PLAN

Plitvice NP is logistically divided into the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes. Entrance 1 is closest to the Lower Lakes, Entrance 2 is slightly closer to the Upper Lakes. The most exciting and worth visiting place in Plitvice National Park is The Big waterfall. If you are in a hurry it is better to park at Entrance 1, from which there is a direct path to Big waterfall. That is exactly what we did, as we came around noon to the park.

PLITVICE PARK HIGHLIGHTS

Like mentioned before, the most exciting place in Plitvice National Park is The Big waterfall, but that is just the beginning of the park story.

Šupljara underground cave is slippery, so be careful, but it is also art of nature.

Near Lake Gradinsko is a series of spectacular waterfalls.

IMG_4715-1

Lake Kozjak is the park’s largest lake.

IMG_4705-1
IMG_4701-1

Lake Prošćansko has perfect Instargam reflection ;).

IMG_4770-1

Park has variety of trails, all linked by the trains and boats. If you have time walk, instead of jumping on to train, nature is spectacular!

TIP: Be aware that swimming is forbidden.

FOOD

There are few places where you can buy food and drinks in Plitvice National Park, but we read that food is expensive there so we carried our own food with us. You can organize a nice picnic with an amazing view to the lakes!

TIP: bring plenty of water, or try water from the stream 🙂

ACCOMMODATION

If you are planing to stay in area you can either find some apartments or hotels in nearby villages.

Magical watermill village Rastoke

Hello world! Ready for more adventure?

After our Castle adventure in Karlovac county, we drove close to Slunj city and spent night in lovely Restaurant Rooms Pino. We booked double bed room with balcony for very affordable price (approx. 300 HRK). They also have restaurant within object, so we had both dinner and breakfast there.

IMG_4392-1

Rastoke watermill village

First thing in a morning we drove to Rastoke watermill village. We parked on main road, right before village bridge, on a public parking (fee approx. 1 EUR per hour). Right there, you can see Rastoke beauty!

IMG_4399-1
IMG_4430-1
IMG_4488-1

Slunjčica flows into the Korana River across cascades creating waterfalls of different size – MIND BLOWING, we know! Rastoke are often called Plitvice’s little sister, but they are so much more than that!

We spent only half day in Rastoke, but would recommend you to take entire day! Etno village is small itself, but it is a place you can get lost in.  They have tavern, mill, textile house, museum, fishpond and meadow with a totem in the middle. The waterfalls in Rastoke were named after the mill owners, and the most famous ones are Buk, Hrvoje and Fairy Hair (local: Vilina kosa). But our favorite in village was hidden cave bellow waterfall.

Castles of Croatia

Hello world! How are you?

We are doing pretty good since spring arrived in Croatia, there are plenty of sunny days to travel around this beautiful country. This time road took us to Karlovac and we decided to explore castles around it.

Dubovac castle

First stop is Dubovac castle! It is castle from 13th century and it overlooks city of Karlovac. It was once owned by famous Croatian counts and dukes, including Frankopan and Zrinski family. Nowadays, most of castle is under renovation, but there is restaurant inside where you can try and enjoy local cuisine. Don’t miss small lake (on a side of the castle) and the great view point (in front of castle).

IMG_4184-1
IMG_4190-1
IMG_4210-1

We easily found Dubovac castle on GPS, but for next ones we had to use “ask the locals” method. There are almost none markings on the road, so follow directions for cities castles are located in.

Ozalj castle

That leads us to city of Ozalj and Ozalj castle. Castle is located on a cliff above the Kupa River. Once, it was the joint castle of the Croatian noble families Frankopan and Zrinski, which has great historical value. There is small entrance fee for Castle and Museum (approx. 4 EUR per person). We wandered for a while around the Castle’s courtyard, but didn’t enter the museum. The views of Kupa river from castle are amazing!

Ozalj Power Plant

Near Ozalj castle, you can also see Ozalj Hydroelectric Power Plant, which is the second oldest hydroelectric power plant in Croatia. Ozalj Power Plant looks breathtaking and you can easily say it was our third “castle” in Karlovac county :).

IMG_4365-1
IMG_4227-1
IMG_4375-1

Ribnik Old town Castle

Last spot, of our trip, was city of Ribnik and Castle Old town (local: Stari grad). Old town Ribnik castle is feudal lowland castle with circular courtyard and the only ‘water castle’ or island’s town, in Croatia. Old town Ribnik was used for filming several historical films. Unfortunately, castle is not open for visitors, which is such a shame. We used our Mavic drone to see what is inside.

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0012.JPG

We are staying in this region and visiting Rastoke watermill village next! If you are planing to explore this region more, like we did, there are affordable places to sleep in Karlovac.

TOP 5 beaches in Split

Summer is around the corner and we set on taking a first swim in Adriatic sea on May 14th! Not making promises, just stating our goals.

Split is our hometown, so we already have our beach preferences based on: proximity to our home, parking area, best bar and, of course, friends. Is it pebbly or sandy, clean beach or not; it really doesn’t matter. There is something special about coming alone to the beach and find bunch of friends there, without even picking up the phone ❤

IMG_5889-1

Now, if you are first time in Split, to make your search for a perfect beach as easy as possible we made little “guide”. Split doesn’t have “the best beaches in the world” kind of beach, but don’t dismiss idea of taking a swim on a hot sunny day! Our guide is based on cool places to chill, have coffee and do nothing, but relaxing all day.

1. Obojena Svjetlost, also called Kastelet beach

This pebbled beach just below the Marjan Hill. Close by you have Ivan Meštrović Gallery, so you can visit it before (not after, when you are all wet and salty, still it is a gallery). You can reach it on foot, bus (no. 12) or with a car. In high summer season parking a car there looks like game of Tetris, so we advise you to walk there. It is approx. 20 minute walk from city center. On the beach there are two coffee bars and that is it! What else do you need? Beach and coffee, that is how locals do it.IMG_3841-1

2. Numerous Marjan hill beaches.

3. Trstenik beach

This pebble beach is right below Radisson Blu Split Hotel which partly maintains the beach. VIP deck platform is operated by the hotel and you can use it if you are guest there.

The rest of the beach is open for public. Beach is very clean and equipped with sunbeds and parasols (available for rent), still if you don’t want to pay sunbed rent fee, you can come there and put your towel wherever you want. Keep in mind, beach is in walking area (you can reach it from Znjan beach and buses 8 &15) and has no natural shadow.

IMG_8277-1

4. Znjan beach

Approx. 1 km long pebbly beach, just around the corner from Trstenik beach. Beach is usually crowded and loud, right on dirt parking (convenient but dusty), not very well clean or maintained, doesn’t have natural shadow, has different styled bars and restaurants (so each 100 meters you have different kind of loud music style too), not very attractive, etc. So, you are wondering why is on this list?

The advantage of this beach is enough parking spaces, so if you are visiting Split by car you can be sure to find a spot there. You can also reach it by bus number 8 or 15. Znjan is the most popular beach for water spots (wind surfing, kite surfing, jet ski). One part of beach has accessibility for the disabled and newly adapted Duilovo beach is dog friendly.

There are also a lot of children friendly activities in the area (playgrounds, trampolines, go cart) which makes it suitable for families. Doesn’t sound bad now, right?

IMG_2826-1

5. Bacvice

Last, but not least on our list is Bacvice beach. Most popular sandy beach in Split, mostly because of it’s proximity to the city center (10 minute walk) and local game called “picigin” (beach game protected as a cultural heritage). Local people play picigin all year long, even during winter time. It is played with small ball which you toss around with hand palm. This beach is very shallow, so it is easy for players to run trough the sea, trying to catch the ball – which actually makes game fun. Local spectators usually drink coffee in “Zbirac” coffee bar and enjoy the show.

IMG_2810-1

Beach also offers sunbeds and parasols (for rent), restaurants and bars (which are open 24/7 during summer). Bacvice beach is a big part of Split nightlife, so if you are up for a party, you have to stop by. Now, this is a story for another blog, let us know if you want to hear about Split nightlife in comments below.

Don’t forget to hydrate, put on sun screen and buy beach accessories 🙂

Dubai Top 10 things to do

Hello world! We visited Dubai!

DCIM100GOPROGOPR7171.

How to start this story? Well…Dubai has the world’s tallest building, hotel and residential building, the largest mall in the world, the world’s largest aquarium and the second largest man made marina on Earth. Oh, it also has beach, desert safaris, sky dive, amusement parks, indoor ski resort and many more things. Do we even need to explain why we chosen to travel there?

Unfortunately, we stayed only for 3 days and didn’t get to experience it all. Still, we enjoyed Dubai to the fullest and picked our

Top 10 things to do in Dubai:

1. Dubai Desert Safari with dinner

5-1

We will give you full insight to our Dubai desert Safari adventure in our next blog! Make sure you FOLLOW US, so you don’t miss it 🙂

2. Burj Khalifa – “At the top”

6-1

We love seeing cities from the highest point and in Dubai we saw it from the highest building on Earth – Burj Khalifa.

Building is 828m tall and has open deck on the 124th floor. Ticket fees start at 125AED (approx. 35 EUR). Tickets are cheaper if you pre-book online. You can also go higher to the 148th floor, to the world’s highest observation deck, but it will cost you extra, 350AED (approx. 90 EUR).

3. Atlantis Waterpark and Palm Island

Thrilling high-speed water slides, river rapids, pools and beach equals full day fun. The best is that we show you this experience trough video:

TIP: pre-book your tickets online (saves money) and buy ticket with lunch menu included (cheaper then buying on site). Travel light (swimsuit and GoPro) and bring your own towel. There are lockers you can rent out, for a certain fee.

4. Dubai Fountain

Fountain is designed by the Bellagio people from Las Vegas and it is second largest choreographed fountain system in the world. Yes, again something the greatest!

Each night, from 6 pm, every half an hour Dubai Fountain makes 5 minute choreography followed by song and colorful lights. You will never see the same show twice! Here you can see our show (VIDEO). Show is free and you can enter it from Dubai Mall. Come earlier to pick a seat or you can have a drink at one of the restaurants on the lake where the show is located.

5. Dubai Marina

In Dubai marina, you can take stroll on lovely promenade and find coffee shops and restaurants with unreal skyscraper skyline view. It was definitely our favorite place to hang out in the evening. Follow sweet-smelling smoke in the air and you will find a shisha bar! Shisha is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco, now you get herbal flavor, such as apple, orange or strawberry. We found nice coffee shop, had something to eat, drink, smoked shisha and watched sunset over marina. It sounds perfect, right?

IMG_4006

6. Jumeirah beach and Burj Al Arab

Dubai has fabulous sandy beaches, Jumeirah is just one of those. You can easily access it with a car. Our Hotel had shuttle bus riding to the beach every 30 minutes, so check with your accommodation if they have similar complimentary service. Jumeriah beach is nice place for afternoon chill on crystal white sand, getting the perfect tan by turquoise blue water. Like all beach destinations, there are lot of water sports to choose from, such as Fly board (number 7 on our list), jet ski, kite surfing and diving.

From Jumeirah beach, you can also easily walk to the Burj Al Arab, stunning hotel with curved glass facade. We know it from Roger Federer and Andre Agassi tennis match. Wouldn’t you like to play tennis match 200 meters above the ground? We wouldn’t, but you get the picture why this hotel is so amazing?

7. Fly board Dubai

This is something you can find nowadays anywhere in the world and we suggest you try it at least once in your life. Friendly advice, wear shorts and shirt, rather than swimsuit. Water is so powerful that it literally takes you pants off!

8. Old town & Dubai Creek

Dubai is a new “modern” city and it is advertised as that. However, they also have city’s historic district in Bastakiya Quarter with busy creek, spice market, gold market and few historical landmarks (Jumeirah Mosque, Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai Museum). There, you can see what the city looked like before all developments. We suggest bargaining when visiting the souks in Dubai.

TIP: Take waterbus along the Dubai Creek (price per ride/person is 2 AED or 0,5 EUR) . It’s a great affordable way to explore the old part of town.IMG_3957

9. Dubai Mall

The Dubai Mall has it all! Aquarium, skating rink, waterfalls and top brand clothing shops where you can get lost for the day even if you aren’t interested in buying anything!

TIP: pick up a map of the Mall! Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountains entrances are in Dubai Mall, so combine those 3 in a day tour.

10. Boxpark district

We found this district on first day, by accident. We didn’t find it in tour guides and it should be. It is funky place along Al Wasl Road, home to boutique fashion outlets, cinema, restaurants and coffee shops. But, mind blowing thing is that entire area is constructed out of warehouse and shipping containers!! How cool is that?IMG_0488
